Large Format Photography

The picture above is my recent new buy. A beautiful French camera from the early 19th Century. E Lorillon – Paris 18 x 13cm tailboard field camera with a Berthiot lens.

I have a feeling I will be doing wet plate collodion in the near future and definitely with this antique camera.

It’s a bit hard to gather the right chemicals at the moment as they are very hard to purchase and ship to New Zealand. Whatever problems of gaining these specific chemicals that seem to incur at the moment I am hopeful to get around this. In the meantime I am quite happy to practise the art of paper negatives as I have quite a bit of expired paper to work with.

Here is one of my first samples; it’s exciting using an old relic. Sometimes you come across a piece of well made history that was meant to be.

I’ll also be on the look out for some more large format lenses of the early 19th Century.

Of course I will still be using these little beauties. They can produce wonderful 9 x 12 photos.

Until

Next time
